Environmental History by G. D.

As John Eagle said “California is a most beautiful country”. Indeed California is gorgeous because it has a diverse environment, with the coast in the west, Colorado and Mojave deserts to the south, the sierra Nevada to the east, and the Cascade mountain to the north.
When gold was discovered in the west, a lot of business wanted to move their to take advantage of the goods in the west. It had open field for agriculture, diverse animals , and a lot of fish in the sea , thus, people who moved to California (Californians) believed that using natural resources will boost the American Economy and will transform the wilderness and desert to town and cities. Once businessman started moving west , they started opening gold Mines, along with other mines and getting into agrarian agriculture in wide fields . However, extracting all the natural resources came with a disadvantage , like, pollution, diseases, and cutting trees; to build houses. Moreover, a lot of  immigrants moved to California for the high paid labor , which attracted a lot of settles to the West.
Andrew Isenberg's purpose is to show the west was created, and how businessmen, settlers, and the government came together in the making of the West. he shows how America has a mining economy , an economy built on taking advantage of natural resources the land has, and how the federal government put Acts to ease the migration and business in the west. In his article we heard the voice of the historians, businessmen. And the voice of the immigrants, and the settlers were missing.
In class we talked about oil refinery places for industry and mines, and the use of hydraulics to move water, or use it in agrarian agriculture, also, we talked about the cutting of trees; for building houses and sidewalks, fishing along the river. We talked about how Nature make History, like people make history. By that we mean how Nature and its sources with the help and work of people will determine the history of the country.

Why didn't the industrial area kept separated for the city?  Why didn't they care about diseases and pollution ?
